Ingredients for the black sesame latte recipe
To make this super delicious and healthy black sesame latte, you will need the following ingredients:
- Black sesame paste – basically just super finely ground black sesame seeds that turn into a smooth paste when the seeds get broken down and release their natural oil. Follow this recipe to make your own black sesame paste from toasted black sesame seeds. It will turn out the best in a high-speed blender or a strong food processor, but the article also includes options without any of those two.*
- Oat milk or soy milk – my two favourite plant milk options for making the creamiest black sesame latte. Oat milk is better if you prefer a slightly sweet option because of its naturally present sugars. If you like it less sweet, soy milk will be great. Of course, this recipe will work great with regular milk as well.
- Boiling water – I like to use a bit of boiling water to whisk and dissolve the black sesame paste properly before adding milk. This is especially useful if you like to use frothed milk for making lattes.
- Maple syrup, honey or another sweetener of choice – completely optional; I actually like my black sesame latte without any added sweetener. But, I’ve tried it both with a bit of maple syrup and with a bit of raw honey, and I have to admit that some sweetener does enrich the flavour even more.
* In case you don’t feel like making your own black sesame paste, don’t worry – you can make this black sesame latte with a store-bought black sesame paste such as this one from 100% sesame seeds, or a pure black tahini from 100% sesame, like this one.
Three ways to make black sesame latte
1. The smoothie chick way
Dear healthy vegan bloggers, I hear you. Why even bother dissolving the paste in hot water when you can simply put everything into a blender and blend? I agree.
So, the easiest way to make your creamy black sesame latte is this: put all of the ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth, creamy and frothy. It will naturally have a dense foam on top, which makes it look even cooler.
When making a black sesame latte in my blender, I often completely leave out the water from the recipe and make it just with warm plant milk. It only makes it taste richer and creamier, which I love.
2. The barista way
Making your black sesame latte as if it was any other type of latte does not require that much more time, and it can be fun too.
To make it the barista way, just pour some boiling water over your black sesame paste, whisk well to combine, and add a lot of frothed milk on top. This way you can even make latte art with it.
3. Iced black sesame latte
Yes, this delicious drink can be made as an iced latte as well! Perfect for enjoying during hot summer days.
My favourite way of making an iced black latte is just putting two teaspoons of black sesame paste into a blender with a cup of plant milk and half a cup of ice cubes, and blending until it is somewhat smooth but still icy.
Frothing the milk
Unless I am making the whole latte in a blender, I like to froth the milk and make my black sesame latte super creamy. Frothing can be done in several ways, even without fancy equipment:
- I like to use a simple handheld milk frother to do it – it can be used with both cold and warm milk. Just switch it on and move it up and down in a cup of milk until it creates a thick foam. This works best with regular milk, soy milk and some types of oat milk.
- Another cool way is to use a French press: heat up the milk on the stovetop to about 65 °C (149 °F), put it into the coffee press and press a few times until it gets frothy.
- Long blending in a high-speed blender can also make the milk frothy, but I prefer the result with the first two methods.
- If you have an espresso machine at home, this will be the easiest option because you can simply use the milk foamer that you have.
A few reasons to love black sesame latte
- It is a super delicious and creamy beverage with a nutty flavour;
- It is caffeine-free and great for enjoying at any time of the day;
- It can be made in a vegan version with almost any kind of plant milk, or with regular milk;
- Black sesame is a super nutritious and healthy foodstuff full of minerals and other substances that are great for the human body;
- Black latte can be made in a hot or cold version and enjoyed all year round.
Equipment for the best homemade black sesame latte
To sum it up, this is the equipment you may need to make your black sesame latte, depending on the way you want to make it:
- High speed blender – great for whipping up a black sesame latte effortlessly and making it frothy and creamy at the same time.
- Smoothie blender – also a great option on a budget.
- Small whisk – if you don’t use a blender, a small whisk can be used to mix the black sesame paste with boiling water, before adding milk to make the latte.
- Milk frother – optional, if you love to add creamy frothed milk to your drinks.
- French press – another great hack for frothing the milk (read more in the text above).

Notes
Follow this easy recipe to make your own black sesame paste at home.
My favourite type of milk for this black sesame latte recipe is oat milk. It is naturally slightly sweet and combines with the nutty black sesame paste. If you prefer plant milk that is naturally less sweet, soy milk would be a really good option.
Heating the milk to about 65 °C (149 °F) is the best for frothing. No need to heat it too much or bring it to a boil because this could ruin the proteins in milk.
When making this latte in a blender, I sometimes add only warm plant milk (no water) to make it extra creamy. Blending in a high-speed blender will also create a thick foam on top and make it look super cute.
Other cool pieces of kitchen equiplent for making a super creamy black sesame latte include a simple handheld milk frother, a french press for coffee and a smoothie blender. I love all of the mentioned, and often use them at home. Read more details in the post.
